Whoa!

Okay, I'm sure the site-setter--uppers knew, but I just discovered that if you go to "view the whole list" under the Who is Online box on the right, you can see a map which plots your location.

On a privacy concern note, it doesn't bother me that I'm listed there, but is there a way to tell it not to list you on that map?

Strangely, that never even crossed my mind.

Without having anytime spent looking into the matter yet, I'd have to say you probably don't show up if you're a hidden user. That being said I think I may have disabled the hidden user feature because it hints of cyber-stalking and just kind of creeps me out.

I'll look into this stuff over the weekend.

I have to admit, as one of the "site-setter-uppers" Razz

I had more fun with the map and whatnot and it didn't occur that someone might want to "opt out" of that particular option. Hey let's be honest--it was a cool toy! Razz

We'll dig for the way to "opt out" or "opt in" I just think that map is too cool!

Oh I love the map. I think the best route, personally, is to go for the opt-in method rather than the opt-out method, so that people won't be appearing on maps unless they specifically say they want to be.

I agree--but these silly website-setter-uppers get no result when they search for "find the opt in button" Razz

I don't believe it's a problem. Anyone that would take issue with it wouldn't even list their location in their personal info.
Once our site picks up and we get dozens of members (hopefully, millions), it'll be fun to see where everyone's from, and a few people may notice that their are fellow gamers in their area. That's even happened in our group, expect that it involved a messing mailing list instead of a Google Map that causes people to say "Whoa!".

Actually, it's based on tracing back the IP address, not location info. Even unregistered guests show up on it, which is kinda' weird.

We might end up just taking it out, although to be truthful this isn't really one of the most anonymous-oriented sites. I mean, eventually, we'll likely be putting up the equivalent of people's online resume's up along with their creative works.

Actually 777, you'll notice that I didn't mention my location in my personal info. Do I go out of my way to "hide" where I am? No not really and you folks all know me so that's different, but I usually put "in Lothlorien" or something in my location because I'm a single chick and I figure I should at least make the stalker work for it.

Since users can now opt out of the system, I've re-enabled the map feature.

To opt out of the "Who is Online?" system, simply go into your profile, and into the "Preferences" tab and select "Hide My Online Status."

If your online status is "hidden", then the only people who should be able to see you online (or on the map) is administrators, and only through the admin panel.
